The TRC team including our partner Chris Hay from Locales Limited visited Moonta this week and spoke with National Trust staff and volunteers, Councillors and staff of Copper Coast Council and representatives from Tourism Yorke Peninsula and History and Heritage SA about their vision and hopes for tourism at this National Heritage listed site. Moonta, once SA's largest town outside Adelaide, was mined by Cornish migrants who bought their hard-rock mining techniques to Australia. The place retains significant evidence of this innovative industrial heritage as well as the stories of hardship and struggle which led to the establishment of the Miners' Union. The School of Mining at the site was a precursor to the establishment of the University of Adelaide.
TRC will be recommending improvements to the existing experiences and identifying potential new experiences for the site that will drive growth in visitor markets, numbers and yield.
