TRC was engaged to deliver a long-term strategic framework, which would guide tourism development, marketing and industry involvement, improve visitor experiences and facilities and strengthen the whole of the Gippsland visitor economy through sustainable visitation and investment.

The Destination Management Plan identified the importance of tourism to Gippsland and unique offerings that lie within the region that could be leveraged to strengthen its positioning and facilitate economic growth and employment to 2030. It identified 7 strategic priorities, each with several actions that aimed to increase visitation, average length of stay, yield, customer satisfaction and repeat/referral visitation for Gippsland.
