Project Description

TRC worked with project partners Thylacine on this project to contribute to a Strategic Plan which would help build on the vision of the Worimi Local Aboriginal Land Council through the opportunity to establish and run a Cultural Centre that would enable Worimi culture to be appreciated and shared.

The Worimi people are the traditional owners of approximately 3,900 square kilometres which includes the Hunter River to the south, up to the coastal towns of Foster/Tuncurry near Cape Hawke to the north and inland to approximately Gresford, Dungog and Gloucester.

The primary focus of the Centre would be to provide a place where Worimi would feel welcome and at home on their country, that would celebrate Worimi and that would be attractive to visitors.

The overall Strategic Plan was comprised of an interpretive planning process, business plan and operational model for the new Centre, including a detailed financial analysis.

TRC applied our trademark approach – Building Tourism Business – to work with the Worimi people throughout this project.

Building Tourism Business is based on 2-way communication and we worked with the Worimi people to understand their situation and aspirations and develop a business that would suit them and their way of life. This required innovation and business structures that would work with communities’ social and cultural needs and responsibilities.

TRC and Thylacine recommended implementation of specific measures around hero experiences, infrastructure improvements and engaging professional support to ensure that the brand and messaging would resonate with the consumer to make Murrook Cultural Centre a compelling attraction.
